My first post simply had to be about Bronx Pizza-- in fact, the Bronx experience was one of the inspirations for the blog you are now reading. This place is everything I want to glorify on these pages: it is unpretentious, the food is outstanding, and despite the name, it is truly a local San Diego experience.

My advice to you: try a slice of plain cheese pizza. At most other pizza places, I adore the toppings. Toppings are good here (see the above pepperoni-ricotta and mushroom slices), but for simple mouthwatering goodness, try the cheese. The tomato sauce is otherworldly, and the cheese is perfect.

Should you choose to eat there, order at the counter, fill your own drinks, and be listen for your name to be called by one of the guys. "Jimmy. One cheese, one pepperoni mushroom for JimMEE." Pictures of boxers, some famous, some not so famous, cover the walls.

If you get it to go, do not let the pizza sit in the cardboard box too long... you will steam your pizza and the crust will lose some of its satisfying crispness. Not a big deal, though. I have steamed many of their pies, and they were still good.

They don't deliver. Someone should start a business that does nothing but deliver their pies.

Pizzeria Luigi is another great thin crust pizza place, but they deliver, and you don't need to worry as much about parking!

These guys have their own web site now, which is currently my favorite non-chain restaurant website in SD. Just a clean and simple site. It is www.bronxpizza.com. No mention on the site of who designed it.

Hoboken pizza in PB (on Garnet/Ingram) is better, they're pretty new (3 yrs.) but gaining ground quickly.

More East coast flava than even the mighty Bronx.

Also, for those of you in North county, try Knockout Pizza in Carlsbad. Great NY Pizza a few blocks from the beach AND they serve Stone IPA on draft.

Lido's Italian in Lemon Grove has great thin crust pizza. They have a loyal following and are always busy. I've been going for over 35 years.

Here's a hint...if you're a big pizza fan and you like to take it "to go"--go buy a pizza stone from Trader Joe's (<$10), heat it to 425 deg. and throw the pizza from the box on it. It fixes the steam problem and makes it taste as fresh as when it comes out of the oven from the Bronx....well worth it....makes a huge difference.

This place is a real class act. Plain cheese or Porko is the move. Also try the whitestone.

Bronx is the bomb, but for those who must have their Chicago Style try Lefty's 3448 30th Street. http://www.leftyspizza.com/ It isn't Giordano's but it will do for San Diego

Bronx is the real deal. Did you know that Luigi's and Knock-out are all owned by ex-Bronx Pizza people? There is one in mission gorge too, same deal. Apparently they get the guys out from back east.. they learn the trade, and go open their own shops.

A few blocks down there is a liquor store called Fiori's. They have excellent pizza too. They sell by the slice as well. I think its $1.00 a slice plus toppings. I really like the one with Spinach and Tomatoes. I actually prefer it when they reheat it so that the crust gets a little crispier.
